Lunar New Year

Let’s party more. The Lunar New Year 2022 could become a federal holiday if Representative Grace Meng has anything to say about it. She is a Democrat from Queens, New York, and has sponsored a bill to make the Lunar New Year a federal holiday. This bill if passed would be the 12th federal holiday. It is also a federal holiday in China, Vietnam, Tibet, Korea, and Asian people living in their original homeland

The Lunar New Year began this year on February 1st but celebrating will go on for about 2 weeks. This ended the Year of the Ox and the start of the Year of the Tiger.

The Asian American population is the fastest growing in this country but violence against Asians is on the rise. Hate crimes are up 339% in 2021 from 2020. Rep Meng stated, ” Federal recognition would demonstrate that the holiday celebrated by millions is also valued by their government.”
